Edutech 2017 Opening Plenary Session - Growth Mindset - Culture and Strategy - Carol Dweck

https://www.ted.com/talks/carol_dweck_the_power_of_believing_that_you_can_improve

How do we make sure people remain learners?

Mindsets - dynamic. We are all a mixture.

Fixed mindset: Intelligence is a fixed trait - a certain amount, and that's it. limits desire for challenge / zest for learning

Growth mindset: Intelligence can be developed

Brain Plasticity - Alfred Binet - the most fundamental capacity to learn can be transformed through education. Against 'fixed intellegence'

Why do mindsets matter?

(refer study by Claro, Paunedku & Dweck, 2016)

Fortune 500 Companies - whether culture of genius (fixed talent), or a culture of development - makes a big difference to success of company

Culture of development  - Employees more committed / empowered.

Why Aren't we Always in a Growth Mindset?

Many things in environment that trigger us back into a fixed mindset.

1. comfort zone
2. Struggle
3. Setbacks & Criticism

(shows use of brain - fixed mindset v/s growth mindset)

What Triggers into a Growth Mindset?

Name and claim - Notice triggers, name it ('Duane'), Think about it affects you - and others, have conversations about it, ("When your Duane comes out, my Edith shows her head!") set small goals: What you will do next time? How to get out of it, and move back into a growth mindset

Direct - to - student Programmes - ask for students' help in developing programme, teaches growth mindset and neuroscience, teaches hw to apply GM to schoolwork

What about Teacher to student transmission?
Many who aspouse GM - were not passing it on. Not walking the walk, in behavious

Focus on Process

Focussing on learning process - not just saying "try hard" - focus on process of learning, improving, understanding

Process Praise - not just effort =  "I like the way you are usung a different strategy to solve the problem"

The Fabulous Struggle

Let's struggle together - even top students saying what they struggle with, because if not have challenges, they will not fill their potential.

"Yet" Comes to the United Nations

Carol invited to speak about GM - taught them the word, "yet". Said - if you are not reaching those ambitious gfoals in a rapid fashion, you just haven't reached them "yet" (learned term from a university that used the grade "not yet" - empowering concept)

How to Treat Failures & Mistakes (failure of the Year award)

Learning lessons that will help organisation, going forward

How do teachers do this? - Normal part of the process.
If Failure = anxiety, will lead to fixed mindset

If teacher sits down with the child "I want to understand your thinking / strategies - Let's talk about where you might go next with that"

Parent approach - would you like to wallow with some icecream first? (empathy) Or would you like to get straight onto dealing with what you might do next?
