Edutech 2017 - Equipping students for the digital age - Catherine Misson, Principal Melbourne Girls' Grammar

Designing Curriculum

https://www.mggs.vic.edu.au/learning/student-programs/senior-years

Didn't start with looking at resources / technology
Strated with "who our girls are"

Reorganise time so that time iis a shared experience.

4 key components over which students exercise a degree of control:
  1. Academic
  2. Wellbeing
  3. Enterprise - expert project managers
  4. Physical (not the traditional 'PE') - integrate phsyical activitiy in day, as makes sense to each girl

"Frustration is a path back to what they know"

Key technologies -

  • Outlook - shaping the day. 50% of each girls' day is scheduled - still has an expert teacher for each area selected. Girls need to master outlook - schedule two week blocks. lectures, workshops, etc that are on offer. Independent learning times - thinking about how should use these. Learning Commons - academic coaches (tertiary level students, carefully recrutied, workshops, etc). Well-being coaches - one session per week / fortnight. self-timetabled. Links up with Fitness coaches - book in a session, or choose between many physical activities on offer.
  • Learning Management system - Schoolbox they've called  'EV' (elearning version 5). Student can go through the tasks that the girl needs to present - able to manipulate when she wants to deliver on a task - creating time within an area she is confident, to work on another area, not so confident. Student Tracking - student and teacher can see how girls are tracking. task set up front - and girls choose when to submit. sometimes girls repeat tasks to get a better mark. full feedback given around each task - posted online. Need better platforms for several curriculum areas. 'Visual Coaching Pro Wellbeing Self Reporting' - used, and very successful. School can archive and track physical data also - bookings, etc - to build a sense of the girl's wellbeing

The paradigm is about students control

leveraging the technology
  • enabling students decision making
  • delivery platforms
  • adaptive content
  • diagnostics
