Kāhui Ako Leadership Day, Matauranga House (Cheryl Doig, Greg Jansen - Leadership Lab, ChCh)

Collaborative Incubator: How do we share ideas with each other?

Touchstones when planning:

  • Change / Leadership thinking
  • Future provocation
  • Own Kāhui Ako teams
  • Cross Kāhui Ako - general & job-a-like or topic-specific
  • Can you eat it?
Processes / Structures shared:
  • Touchstones - connecting with what is important
  • Overview - esp for those who like a structure
  • Whakawhanaungatanga - being able to see yourself in the conversation / in the room
  • Developmental Maps / Mosaics
  • Doughnut - culture, systems - able to be used as a structure - where we are at?
  • Cynefin fraework - what this looks like from complex / complicated aspects
  • Scrum - stand-up meeting - fast / connect
  • SLAM DUNK: a great way to gather ideas from the rest of a large group - rich time to find out what is happening in schools / kura - 1 min slot for each KA - promote something want to ponder/share with a group (4 different KAs) - Everyone attended one of the four to engage in discussion/sharing
Interesting ideas that came out of SLAM DUNK:
  • optimising the people in the WSL roles
  • 'Case study" learners - one child/family interviewed by each teacher across the KA - about "what does success for your child mean for you?"

Area of focus (eg Learner Agency for our Kāhui Ako)
  1. Today's reality - what exists today that will continue to be a focus in the short term? Business as usual... (disparities in understandings and contexts across the 13 schools)
  2. Future Vision - What would you dream?  (learners planning their learner - all the way through secondary also - alignment)
  3. Pockets of Future - what sits as an example of where you want to go? Amplify it - and do more of it - have a deliberate strategy to do this (schools where workshopping is happening in classes? Bec - Science teachers who attended Ben Laybourn, schools/teachers using seesaw, HERO, google classroom in lockdown)
  4. Transformative Innovations - What do we need to start doing in order to pave the way? Tensions, so a communications strategy is necessary. (2 min video of gems of practice)
  5. Keepers - What key aspects of the current system are so important we want to keep them? (mutual respect within the group of principals)
  6. Decommissioning -  what exists in the current system that has no place in your future vision? (uninformed practice, outdated approaches)
Designing this process - all groups need to be honoured (early adopters, visionaries, doubters, etc)

Scenarios: 'So What?'

Kia Puta Ki Rangiātea - Wat would it look like if we had a thriving and equitable future?

FutureS Scenarios:
Students in schools in Christchurch created future scenarios - if things were to shift, what do you notice?

" My school has changed the way my friends and I learn based on some values and language..."

Start looking at:
  • What is positive/interesting about that?
  • planning next steps
One thing I am going to do - try the future scenario concept at school - and with the principals
Use the Areas of Focus Tool to prepare for principals' meeting
